Save The Primates

The Chimfunshi Wildlife Sanctuary Primate Project

Why the Chimfunshi Wildlife Chimpanzee Orphanage?
The idea for Save The Primates website was inspired by our visit to Chimfunshi Chimpanzee Sanctuary in Zambia,
and so we feel that it is appropriate the first project we raise money for is our friend Sandy the chimpanzee
and his friends the ‘habitual escapees’ at Chimfunshi. Sandy was the first chimpanzee we met whilst
at Chimfunshi and unfortunately not even the highest electric fence can keep him from escaping.

Save The Primates is well on the way of achieving it's goal of raising funds for a fully enclosed outdoor area for the escapee chimpanzees.
Thank you so much for the wonderful support of those that have already donated, it is so very much appreciated.
However we are not there yet and any donation is gratefully received. Please, when you are considering whether or not to donate just imagine being locked up in your house for the duration of your life, which when you really think about I'm sure you would agree is not much of a life. That is what these intelligent animals are faced with unless we can raise enough to build the enclosure they deserve.

The Chimps at Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage
Most chimpanzees at Chimfunshi reside in open enclosures of between 5 and 500 acres and so have a way of life as close to natural as possible. Also the majority of them have been humanised and it is not in their best interests to release them back into the wild. Find out more about the Chimpanzee here.

The Problem with the Chimps
One of the biggest problems faced by Chumfunshi Chimpanzee Sanctuary is escapees. Because a fully grown chimpanzee can be 4 times stronger than a human, very aggressive and with the ability to easily cause significant harm or even death, it is important that they are unable to escape their enclosures.

Unfortunately there is always a group of chimps whom, no matter how high the electric fence is, simply view a few shocks as a short term inconvenience and consistently scale the perimeter fence and escape. Because of this and a significant lack of funding to build escape proof enclosures for the chimpanzees, these beautiful animals reside in small indoor compounds. This is a way of life Sheila and Sylvia Siddle would prefer their chimps did not have to lead but at present there is no other option.

The Solution
Chimfunshi Sanctuary have plans to build a fully enclosed outdoor enclosure so that these cheeky chimps can have the quality of life they deserve.  But they need your help to make these plans a reality...

You can help...
