Why the Chimfunshi Wildlife Chimpanzee Orphanage?
In the words of Shelia Siddle, Co Founder Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage, ‘Because these aren’t just animals to Dave and I. They are precious individuals who came to us in a time of need and allowed us to help them, who had the nobility and strength of character to permit us to get close. I often say they forgive us and I believe it’s true’.

It is been a long road for the team at Chimfunshi to not only finish the new enclosure for the boys but also then find the resources to move them. There have been significant delays along the way, including the truck breaking down, a lack of concrete in the region and illness. The new enclosure is now complete, but even with this positive step the impeding move has not been without sadness.

From Innocent, Chimfunshi Manager
"On 4th April 2012, Chimfunshi started with the first phase of trying to let the boys outside, right there at the Orphanage (Bachelor quarters). We agreed that we would let them out into the woods for acclimatisation and also to see whether they were still up to their old tricks of trying to jump over the fence. This would take place before their permanent move to their new enclosure. We were all prepared for the worst but luckily the boys never even bothered to do anything silly. They were too excited with their new found 'freedom' and they behaved perfectly well. Chimfunshi staff personally walked around the fence with them, about 5 times, probably trying to mark their 'new boundaries'. They all kept a closer watch for anything out of the ordinary. On the advice of Sheila Siddle, Charles was going to be the last one to be let out once his friends had settled down. The anxiety on Charles was too much and as we were about to let him out, he so very sadly collapsed and died. We tried to resuscitate him but very little could be done, he was gone.

However the other boys are doing great and they have established a structure amongst themselves. Every morning they are been let out into the woods for 4 hours, so far so good!!"
