Gorilla
(Western & Eastern Gorilla)


GorillaGorilla Description:
The Gorilla is the largest of the living primates and is divided into two species with at least two subspecies each.

  1. Western Gorilla, with subspecies -
     Western Lowland Gorilla
     Cross River Gorilla
  2. Eastern Gorilla, with subspecies -
     Mountain Gorilla (Virungas & Bwindi)
     Eastern Lowland Gorilla (Grauers)

Gorillas travel by knuckle walking. Males have a body length of 165cm-175cm and weigh 140kg-200kg. Females are approximately 140cm in length and 100kg.

Gorilla Habitat:

  • Western Lowland & Cross River Gorilla - located in West and Central Africa
  • Mountain & Eastern Lowland Gorilla - located in Rwanda, Uganda, Democratic Republic of Congo.

Gorilla Social Structure and Behaviour:
Live in groups with a strong dominant male troop leader known as the silverback. The silverback makes the decisions, takes responsibility for safety and determines feeding sites.

Gorilla Life Cycle:
Sexual maturity occurs 10-12 years for females and 11-13 for males. Gestation is 8.5 months and there is usually 3-4years between births with infants staying with the mother during this time. Life span is 30-40 years.

Gorilla Diet:
Gorillas are omnivores and eat fruits, leaves, shoots and occasionally insects although this makes up only 1-2% of their diet.
